Why the cable swap is the real problem

Reaching behind the monitor to move a cable, or clicking through the input menu with the bezel buttons, takes about thirty seconds. That is short enough to sound like nothing and long enough that you stop doing it. So the bank login happens on the work laptop. The flight gets booked there. The friction pushes your private life onto a machine you do not own.

That is a bad trade. Managed laptops commonly run monitoring software, and the company's data policy covers everything that happens on the device. When you change jobs, or IT pushes a reset, the device is wiped or locked with your things still on it. One keypress to your own computer removes the excuse.

The setup

You need two computers on the same home network and a monitor with two inputs. The work laptop goes in a dock or on a stand and connects to one input. Your own computer connects to the other. Install EasyKVM on both and pair them once with a 6-digit code. There is no account to create.

A normal day

Morning: hotkey to the work laptop, and the monitor, keyboard, and mouse are its for the day. Lunch: hotkey back, and your own desktop is on screen with your own browser and your own accounts. After hours, the work laptop stays docked and off screen. It is still charging, still on the network, and you are not on it.

System audio follows the switch. A meeting on the work laptop plays through the headset on your own computer, and music on your own computer stays there when you switch to work. Your microphone does not travel over the link, so for calls use the laptop's built-in mic or a headset plugged into it. The clipboard follows too: copy an address on your own computer, switch, paste it into the work calendar.

What to check before you install

Permission to install on the work laptop. If IT manages the device, ask first. The usual questions are whether the app phones home and whether it needs an account. Do I need to install anything on the work laptop?
