The port-matching problem
A hardware KVM has to pass video through unchanged. So every port on the box must match what your computers put out and what your monitor takes in. HDMI 2.0 and HDMI 2.1 look identical from the outside and carry very different bandwidth. DisplayPort 1.2, 1.4, and 2.0 are the same story. A switch listed as "4K" often means 4K at 60 Hz on one port and 1080p on the other.
Add a laptop and the list grows. If it connects over USB-C, the switch has to pass video, USB data, and power delivery at a wattage that will not throttle the machine. Then come the cables. A KVM adds a second cable run between each computer and the monitor, and a cheap or overlong cable drops you below the refresh rate you paid for.
For a KVM switch with 4K 144Hz on both inputs the shopping list is short and the boxes sit at the top of the $80 to $400 range. One wrong spec and you are packing it up for a return.
USB re-enumeration on cheap units
Most KVM switches share USB by physically disconnecting your peripherals from one computer and connecting them to the other. To the operating system that is an unplug and a replug. Every switch, every device starts over.
In practice: a USB DAC pops or resets its volume. A gamepad drops out of the game. A security key forgets it was inserted. A webcam re-initializes and the call freezes for a second. Better switches keep some devices powered across the flip, but that is a feature you pay extra for, and the spec sheet rarely says which devices survive.
Desk clutter and the price ladder
A two-computer KVM means the box, two video cables in, one out, two USB uplinks, and a power brick. That is six or seven cables on a desk that had three.
Prices climb with resolution and refresh rate. A switch that handles 1440p or 4K at high refresh runs $80 to $400, and the cheaper units in that range usually cap at 1080p or 60 Hz on at least one port. One that handles a Mac over USB-C and a PC over DisplayPort at the same time sits at the expensive end. And a hardware KVM cannot be updated. When your next monitor needs a newer port version, you buy a new switch.
The software answer: your monitor already has two inputs
Look at the back of your monitor. It almost certainly has two or more inputs: HDMI and DisplayPort, or USB-C and HDMI. Plug computer one into one input and computer two into the other. That is the video half of a KVM, and it costs nothing. Each computer drives the monitor directly, at whatever resolution and refresh rate your monitor and cable support. There is no box in the signal path to cap it.
What is missing is the switch. Most monitors made after about 2015 support DDC/CI, a VESA standard that lets software send commands to the monitor over the video cable. One of those commands is "change input." EasyKVM sends it when you press a hotkey. Our DDC/CI guide explains the mechanism.
The keyboard and mouse half works over your LAN. Your keyboard and mouse stay plugged into one computer, the host. Press Ctrl+Alt+Q: the monitor flips input, and your keystrokes and mouse movement are forwarded to the other computer over the local network. Press it again to come back. Clipboard and system audio follow the same way. Nothing is unplugged, so nothing re-enumerates. Your DAC does not pop. What you need, honestly
- A monitor with DDC/CI input switching. Most made after 2015 have it, but some ignore the input-switch command even when other DDC/CI controls work. The trial tells you in minutes. The troubleshooting page covers the common failure modes.
