Why a hotkey beats mouse-edge switching between computers
Synergy, Barrier, Input Leap, Logitech Flow, and Mouse Without Borders move your mouse to the other computer when the cursor hits the edge of the screen. It feels like magic for a day. Then you launch a game. This page covers where edge crossing breaks down and why an explicit hotkey toggle is the more predictable model.
How edge-crossing tools work
The tool watches your cursor. When it reaches the edge you mapped to the other computer, it hides the local cursor, starts forwarding mouse and keyboard events over the network, and the other computer's cursor appears on that computer's own screen. Cross back and control returns. The design assumes two things: each computer has its own display, and the cursor is free to reach the edge.
Most of these tools also let you bind a hotkey to jump between machines. But the edge is the default and the reason people install them, and the shared-monitor problem below stays either way.
Games and fullscreen apps capture the cursor
Games lock the cursor inside their window. First-person games keep the pointer centered and read raw movement, so it never reaches an edge. Strategy games hold the cursor at the edge on purpose, to scroll the map. Either way there is nothing for the edge tool to detect, or worse, it treats the map scroll as a crossing and yanks control to the other computer mid-match. "Synergy not working in games" and "Mouse Without Borders games" are common searches for a reason.
Fullscreen apps do the same. Video players, remote desktop clients, and virtual machines that capture input all compete with the edge tool for the same cursor.
Accidental crossings
Edge crossing turns the border of your screen into a switch you can trip by accident. Drag a window to the far side and control jumps. Flick a scrollbar. Draw a stroke to the edge of the canvas on a tablet. Reach for the close button in the corner. Each of those is a normal thing to do on one screen and a machine switch on the other. Tools add a delay or a corner dead zone to reduce this, which also makes deliberate crossings slower.
Multi-monitor layouts
With one screen per machine, "the edge" is clear. With two or three monitors on one machine, it is not. Which edge of which monitor hands off? A three-wide layout has a left edge on the left monitor only, and monitors of different heights leave gaps where the cursor either sticks or falls through. Every layout change means redrawing the screen arrangement in the tool's configuration.
Sleep, lids, and screens that disappear
A laptop lid closes and its screen is gone, but the tool's layout still has an edge pointing at it. A monitor goes to sleep. A computer wakes and reconnects at a different resolution. Edge tools depend on a stable map of screens, and desks with laptops are rarely stable. When the map is wrong, the cursor vanishes off an edge into a computer you cannot see.
Edge tools do not switch a shared monitor
This is the biggest gap. Every edge-crossing tool assumes each computer has its own display. If both computers share one monitor, crossing the edge sends your mouse to a screen you cannot see while the monitor keeps showing the first computer. None of these tools sends the DDC/CI input-switch command, so the monitor never changes. For a one-monitor desk, edge crossing solves the wrong problem. A toggle is deterministic
A hotkey toggle removes the guessing. Control moves when you press the key and only then. Nothing you do with the mouse, in a game, a drawing app, or at a screen edge, moves it. The state is binary: you are on computer A or on computer B, and you know which because you chose.
